In the past, the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credence. But silence is no any longer an option.
The STR has been campaigning to eliminate content from textbooks that explain evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is only one example of the way in which the development paradigm has evolved.
What is Evolution?
The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the changes in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their environment which can result in changes in genes, or even entire genomes. Over time these changes could result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how individuals with traits that are advantageous survive and reproduce more than those with disadvantageous ones. Over time, this differential reproduction can lead to the development of entirely new species.
The word "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed, both in science and in other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to evolve into a different species. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process by which living things develop characteristics to increase their chances of surviving or conceiving offspring. Over time this genetic variation can lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological traits in the same population. The shift in gene frequency is called natural selection, and it drives most evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, can't be considered evolution because they don't pass on to future generations.
Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial, even though it has been proven to be true by thousands of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. They argue that the theory should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high school. This includes the removal of references about the evolutionary origins for humans and Archaeopteryx - a feathered dinosaur believed to be the bird's ancestor.
Why is Evolution important to humanity?
Evolution explains how the Earth and all its living species evolved. It is also a foundation of biology that helps scientists comprehend how living organisms operate and grow. Evolution also helps us understand the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution in order to better understand nature and make useful discoveries, such as the development of new drugs.
The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so much about the universe as well as life on Earth and has been thoroughly tested and confirmed over many years. Many people, and even religious leaders, are in support of the scientific theory. It is important to understand that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religious beliefs, as the theory only deals with processes, objects, and events within the physical world.
In reality, many religious people have discovered ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolution. For instance some Christians believe that God created the world through evolution, and that humans share an ancestral connection with other animals.
It is crucial that scientists and educators speak out for the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in a few countries around the globe the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbook content on the evolutionary history of horses and their avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
It is important to remember that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, including fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

What is Creationism?

Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists generally fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
YECs are the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation is literal and that the universe and life on Earth were created only recently.
OECs are less well known however they're just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a lie.
Both types of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origins of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern science shunned miracles out of fear they might lose their credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their view "theistic evolution." This is sometimes also known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." This theory states that God creates original species and then allows them to evolve over time. In the end, these evolutionary changes will result in new species similar to the original ones.
Others believe that God created the universe and all living things in one event, referred to as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the first species were all created simultaneously, and that they developed slowly afterwards. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.
In general, creationists oppose teaching evolution at schools. Numerous professional organizations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions are however more flexible and allow evolution and creationism to be included in their curriculum.
What is Creationism in Korea?
When people think about the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their textbooks. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. Its next target is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research and also on human evolution.
STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an image of students as being negative. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe in evolution. The causes aren't clear but could be due to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists in the country.
The KACR accomplished a number of things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences with an evolutionary perspective that sparked interest in college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught to this day.
On August 6-7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
